Valentina Rodionenko earlier today confirmed that Ivan Stretovich will take the place of Nikita Ignatyev on the main Russian gymnastics team. 19 year old Stretovich, from Novosibirsk, Siberia, is Russian Cup champion on the pommel horse and high bar. His first major senior competition was the 2014 World Championships where he performed on pommels only. Stretovich was originally selected as a reserve and the decision to bring him onto the main team was based on his superior performance quality compared to Ignatyev, according to Rodionenko.
For the women, the news is that Angelina Melnikova is recovering well from the hamstring injury she aggravated at one of the final control competitions at Round Lake. Valentina says that she is back to training her full routines again.

Stretovich should have been named to the team instead of Ignatyev in the first place. Stretovich has been looking better than Ignatyev for a while. Between the two, Ignatyev is stronger only on rings. However, Stretovich has not competed well in international competitions. Nanning and Glasgow did not see him at his best. Let's hope the gets it together in Rio.

ReplyDeleteOk one more thing, from your Geo Blocked Russian video link on RRG on Facebook, Seda was training vault. Two things, the good one is that she was working on the height by doing uphill layout yurchenckos. Hopefully she is going to shoot either an Amanar or a high double twister. The bad one is that her right leg was heavily wrapped with a blue tape. Finger crossed. Other than that there isn't much in that video.

ReplyDeleteNot good at all! Euros team is experienced, reliable and proven stable. They come to the Rio with the confidence of the European champions. They performed well together and got chemistry. Now this last minute Valentina mess ?! Farewell podium. Stretovich has never made an international impression and he has got a cold foot for some reason. Ignatyev had a character and stability. I believe that Stretovich is going to be the wedding crasher. Can any one invite the Rodios to a trip to the Amazon jungles with a one way ticket?
ReplyDeleteIgnatyev is stable? He has a history of falling in competitions. I understand your point that the Euro team is a solid one. Ignatyev has been a regular on the Russian team for the last three years. It is jarring to see him removed from the Olympic team at this late hour. However, Stretovich looked better than Ignatyev at Russian Cup. I understand why the move was made, but I wish the timing was earlier. The Rodionenkos love to mess with the team, unfortunately. They are the anti-Marta Karolyi. Marta never removes a girl from an Olympic team even if she's injured. The impact to the team is too great. I wish the Rodionenkos realized that.
DeleteOh please ! At the Russian Cup Polyashov looked better then both Stretovich and Ignatyev! And what we see at the end another "pokhomenko" is on olympic team and Vlad is nowhere near in team! This is crime in the bad bad russian corruption traditions! Bqz Polyashov should be on the team after Russian Cup, coz he is true winner of the fifth olympic spot!

DeleteNone of us are there or know exactly how they're training. I feel terrible for Ignatyev, but his mother is by no means an unbiased source. It's a shame alternates aren't allowed to do podium training, because that would have been a good way to test the two. Instead they basically had to make the decision before PT tomorrow.

Until now we’ve not heard from Nikita Ignatyev himself regarding the controversial team switch.
As we know, Ignatyev was originally on the official team with Ivan Stretovich as one of the reserves. Ignatyev was slated to contribute mostly on pommel horse, parallel bars, and high bar. However, yesterday the Rodionenkos decided to replace Ignatyev with Stretovich because Stretovich has been doing better in training. It’s caused quite a commotion among fans and especially Ignatyev’s family.
Despite the disappointment, Ignatyev insists he doesn’t plan to retire.
“No hard feelings towards Vanya. He’s very good, maturing, and giving a good fight.”
“I plan to take a break from all this and slowly return to training all refreshed. Looking at our events, Vanya and I pretty even in terms of scoring potential. But the coaching staff must think my team performances in this cycle with gold medals at Universiade, European Championships, and European Games are worthless.”
“They forgot about what happened four years ago in London and don’t care that I’m 24 years old now; the next Olympic cycle will be tough for me. The same can’t be said for Ivan who’s only 20 and at the beginning of his career.”
“On Thursday after the closed control they called out everyone and began to sort us out by the exit. At that time I was on the team for Rio, then I left the training hall. Ten minutes later Andrei Rodionenko came in and announced a "battle” between me and Vanya on pommel horse, parallel bars, and high bar. Whoever wins goes to Rio. It became clear to me I was in a losing position; I already got what it was all about. Later they told me in secret that David Belyavskiy and Nikita Nagornyy had suggested the idea to the coaching staff. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but coaches simply don’t change their minds like that in just 10 minutes.“
Very nostalgic! Remings me of the same "sane" decision of replacing Komova with Grishina in London TF on floor. Another historical "well informed strategic decision" by the Rods for the glory of gymnastics and olympic movement. It would have been better to blanket ban Russia from Rio for the sake of saving face and longevity of the Rods. I just hope this decision becomes a catalyst of the end of the Rods era.
ReplyDeleteGrishina replaced Komova on floor to protect Komova for the AA final - and in the end Komova did achieve a silver medal there, even if Grishina flubbered her tumbling in TF. The issues involved in Rodionenko's decision and the political reasons for it were entirely different to this occasion.
ReplyDeleteI understand why Ignatyev is upset and I am not surprised that his family have reacted this way - although I wouldn't expect it to happen in public. However, I do think that Rodionenko's actions were legitimate. My only question, based on sight of the respective marks achieved by Stretovich and Ignatyev in recent competitions, is why Stretovich wasn't on the main team from the beginning?
The way it was done does seem brutal - but then again, gymnastics is a brutal sport and this kind of thing has always gone on and will always go on, not just on the Russian team.
I don't think we should pillory Rodionenko - he is just doing his job. This isn't the first time a team roster at the Olympics has changed - in any country. Disappointed athletes do need to vent sometimes.
Nagorno and beliavsky acted like mafia to damage Ignatyev,there is not even a picture of him(ign) in the group these days .It is a well-made plot. If it were not a plot they would make the change before leaving ... and they would put Polyashov and not Vanya. " I don't know of it's true or not, but coaches simply don't change their mind like that in just 10 minutes"...he's not only disappointed. It's not the case where an athlete is stronger than another, this is the reason of my (and others) rage. Sorry for bad english
DeleteI read the accusations made against Nagorny and Belyavskiy for their role in having Ignatyev removed. I don't believe those accusations. Why on earth would Nagorny and Belyavskiy do such a thing if Ignatyev was looking great in training? Does anyone really think that the Rodios would make decisions about the Olympic team based on the opinions of Nagorny and Belyavskiy? That defies logic and belief. I don't think Andrei Rodionenko would listen to Nagorny about his opinion on where to buy Powerade, much less to Nagorny's opinion on who should make the Olympic team.
DeleteI agree with you - the entire basis of these accusations is emotional speculation. I am sorry for Ignatyev, his disappointment and the way that the change was made, but it was legal and quite valid given the measures I have seen.

I have tolerated them to date to give people a chance to exhale their feelings, but I will suspend the discussion for now if readers don't mind too much - I just want the team to settle down and do well, and I hope Nikita Ignatyev can recover in time and come back to compete again after a rest.
Glad Melnikova is doing well but how long has she been back to training all four events? Wonder how much time she has had. I would imagine that means zero chance of any rumored Amanar.

ReplyDeleteFirst things first, we have to recognize that the IOC rules are in play – not the FIG's rules. Some gymnastics fans confuse this. As the FIG's Technical Rules state, "For the OG [Olympic Games] and YOG [Youth Olympic Games], IOC rules apply."
And the IOC rules are pretty strict. They read:
From 19 July 2016 00.00 Rio de Janeiro time (GMT-3) the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Rio 2016) may authorise a permanent replacement of an athlete by another athlete in the same sport, discipline, and event.
Okay, we're good so far. This is happening after July 19, 2016, and we don't have a rower replacing an artistic gymnast. Ivan Stretovich is replacing a fellow artistic gymnast. No broken rules so far. Let's go on…
Each decision will be made after consultation with the relevant International Federation (IF) [in our case, the FIG] and its respective medical expert and, when deemed appropriate, the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Such replacement will only occur when there are urgent medical conditions preventing participation of an athlete, or otherwise on a case-by-case basis for exceptional circumstances.
Can you see the problem here? As far as we know, Nikita Ignatyev does not have an urgent medical condition that is preventing him from competing, nor are there exceptional circumstances that we know of. He simply wasn't hitting in training."
